ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000? Choosing the Right Certification

Both are built on the same standard, but buyers do not always treat them the same. A quick guide to the difference and to which one your customers expect.

ISO 22000 sets out the requirements for a food safety management system for any organisation in the food chain. FSSC 22000 builds on it.

What FSSC 22000 adds

  • Sector-specific prerequisite programmes (the ISO/TS 22002 series).
  • Additional scheme requirements, such as food defence and food fraud mitigation.
  • Recognition by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), which many retailers and brand owners require.

Which one do you need?

If your customers are large retailers or international brands, they will often ask for a GFSI-recognised scheme such as FSSC 22000, BRCGS or IFS. If you need a solid, internationally recognised system for your own operation or for a wider range of customers, ISO 22000 may be enough to start.

A path that grows with you

Many businesses build an ISO 22000 system first and add the FSSC requirements later. A gap analysis shows how far you are from either.
